Minister must put local communities in driving seat

December 15, 2005 4:23 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has welcomed Alistair Darling's announcement that responsibility for speed cameras is to be devolved to the National Assembly for Wales.

Ms Williams said: "I was pleased by today's announcement, and expect a statement from Andrew Davies at the earliest possible opportunity, to tell us what he intends to do with his new powers.

"There is the opportunity here for genuine change; rather than a theoretical transfer of powers, let us see the Minister put local communities in the driving seat and give them a real say in the road safety agenda. That is what communities want, and an innovative devolution to as local a level as possible could make a real contribution to improving safety on Welsh roads and saving lives."
