Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has expressed her concern at the huge difference in energy prices between Wales and the rest of the UK.
According to figures provided by consumer watchdog energywatch, electricity consumers in Wales are paying 10 per cent more for their electricity than consumers in England or Scotland.
Ms Williams said: "Energy prices have risen dramatically in recent years, but it has now become apparent that Welsh consumers are at an additional disadvantage. When this is combined with the problems that many in rural areas have in accessing the mains gas network, we have to be extremely concerned about the number of households who are going to be pushed into fuel poverty this winter.
"The Labour Assembly Government must now take urgent action to ensure Welsh consumers get a fair deal. Thousands of people die each year from cold-related illnesses, a scandal in a supposedly modern, developed, first world country. Until we find a way to make energy more affordable, the problem can only get worse."
