Kirsty battles to save local facilities

July 11, 2006 9:32 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has expressed her concern at the lack of support for public toilets in the constituency.

Following a decision by Powys County Council in May, the public conveniences at Erwood may be closed, while Ms Williams has discovered that a potential £20,000 grant from the Assembly to help the Council keep such toilets open hasn't even been applied for.

Ms Williams said: "The attitude of the Council is short-sighted in the extreme. Local people want these facilities to stay open, and, being right at the roadside, they are an extremely useful facility for visitors travelling from North to South Wales, or attending the Royal Welsh showground.

I have written to the Council to ask them to re-consider their decision, and offer my assistance in applying for an Assembly grant. I do also feel that there has been a lack of Assembly Government backing for public conveniences, and would invite the First Minister to show his support for the Erwood facilities by visiting them on his journey to the Royal Welsh Show this month."

Notes:

Ms Williams also attended a public meeting on the issue on Thursday, when local people clearly expressed their concerns about the closure.
