Kirsty Williams AM & Roger Williams MP, representatives of Brecon & Radnorshire, have expressed their alarm at today's announcement by Powys Local Health Board of proposals to close both Brecon and Bronllys Hospitals and to replace them with one single site.
Kirsty Williams expressed her concern at this shocking news, saying:
"Although this is being put forward under the guise of a consultation process, it seems that the LHB have already made up their minds and are simply 'going through the motions'."
This comes following the news this morning that the LHB are already holding discussions with doctors, consultants, patients groups and the leagues of friends of both hospitals on what services a new hospital would offer the people of South Powys.
Kirsty expressed her scepticism at the benefits of such an amalgamation:
"Over the years the LHB have held many discussions of plans to deliver better standards of patient care and improve medical facilities in Brecon & Radnorshire, but they have continually failed to deliver such promises."
"The LHB's initial announcement has been very vague in setting out what services the new hospital would offer and it seems difficult to imagine that they could be above and beyond what we already have at Brecon and Bronllys."
Commenting on this announcement, Roger Williams said:
"At one stage the best structure was thought to be the maintenance of all community hospitals with each developing a specialty to meet the needs of the people of Powys. Lack of information and lack of willingness to work together on behalf of the Health Board means that I am rapidly losing confidence in the Local Health Board to deliver a first class Health Service."
