TRW - Kirsty Williams comment

November 8, 2006 10:48 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrat Enterprise, Innovation and Networks spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has expressed her sympathy for the workers at TRW Automotive, following the news that 128 jobs are to be lost.

The car parts manufacturer, based in Pontypool, will cut 103 manufacturing jobs, and 25 in staff and support roles, out of a workforce of 500.

Ms Williams said: "My thoughts are with the workers and their families at this difficult time. Unfortunately, these sorts of mass job losses are becoming commonplace in Wales today, as the people of Pontypool know all too well.

"I hope that the Welsh Assembly Government will today give assurances that help and support will be available to the affected workers, but this latest announcement shows that they still have not got to grips with the decline in manufacturing in Wales. Time and again I have been calling for an audit of Welsh manufacturing, in order to predict these sorts of job losses before they happen. The Labour Government needs to step up its game and get much smarter at anticipating which companies and industries are struggling, and how we can attract the businesses of the future to Wales."
