Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has welcomed the cross-party support her amendment received at the Assembly yesterday, which highlighted the importance of a well-funded air ambulance service.
The amendment, which received the backing of all but one AM during a debate yesterday, called on the Assembly Government to provide sufficient investment for air ambulances.
Ms Williams said: "I am delighted that this important amendment has been passed. Air ambulances save lives, particularly in constituencies such as our own, where distances from hospitals can be so great, and the response times of regular ambulances so long. As the reconfiguration of hospitals across Wales continues apace, my constituents must travel further and further to receive medical attention. In some situations, there is only a very small window of time in which a patient must receive lifesaving treatment, and it is in these cases that the services of an air ambulance are paramount."
Notes:
The amendment, laid in Ms Williams name, read 'Add new point at end of motion: recognises the importance of the Wales Air Ambulance service in reducing patient transport times and calls on the Assembly Government to provide sufficient investment'. It was tabled in response to Plaid Cymru's nominated debate. The motion read: 'To propose that the National Assembly for Wales: firmly believes that the Health Commission Wales report on adult neurosurgery services in south Wales is flawed'.
