Welsh Liberal Democrat Enterprise, Innovation and Networks spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has expressed her concern at the loss of 1,000 civil service jobs in Wales.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are closing offices and reducing staff numbers in order to meet Westminster Government cost cutting targets.
Ms Williams said: "My thoughts are with all the workers affected by these cuts - both those facing redundancy and those being forced to relocate. I also have concerns over how the important work they do, which includes helping tax credit claimants and those completing self-assessment tax returns, will be carried out with a much reduced staff.
"I find it astonishing that many of these jobs are being lost from Objective One areas, despite the Assembly Government's alleged support for those most deprived economies. I would be interested to know how Rhodri Morgan and his colleagues feel right now, having their regeneration policies so blatantly undermined by Gordon Brown. This is a clear failure to join up Government in Cardiff Bay and Westminster. I'll be asking EIN Minister Andrew Davies just what representations he made to his London colleagues on this issue."
Notes:
? 977 HMRC jobs are to be lost in Wales over the next five years, according to figures obtained by the Public and Commercial Services Union. Others will have to transfer from West Wales and the Valleys to Cardiff or Wrexham, as offices are closed and sold-on to raise money.
