Community Hospital Prostest at the Assembly

November 22, 2006 2:26 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has addressed the crowds of protesters who have gathered outside the National Assembly for Wales today, to lobby the Assembly Government over the reconfiguration of health services in Wales.

Many of the protestors were from Ms Williams' constituency, concerned over the planned closures at Builth Wells, Bronllys and Knighton hospitals.

Ms Williams said: "I was delighted that so many of my constituents made the journey down to Cardiff today. The huge turnout is testament to the strength of feeling on this issue, both in my constituency and across Wales.

"Having spoken to many of the protestors today, I know that they were angry and disappointed that the Health Minister, Brian Gibbons, could not spare a few moments to join us and hear our concerns. The closure of local health services is the single most important issue in many, many communities in Wales at the moment; the Labour Government ignores them at their peril."

Notes:

· The CHANT (Community Hospitals Acting Nationally Together) lobby that took place this lunchtime was arranged by Kirsty Williams, and North Wales AM Mark Isherwood.

· Health Minister Brian Gibbons was invited to address the protestors, but informed Ms Williams yesterday afternoon that he had other commitments. No Labour AM's were present at the event.
