Kirsty Williams comments on the Rail Fare Increase

November 29, 2006 2:39 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrat Enterprise, Innovation and Networks spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has expressed her concern at news of new train fare rises.

Both Arriva Trains Wales and First Great Western will increase fares above the rate of inflation.

Ms Williams said: "Passengers will be exasperated by these fare increases; many already feel ticket prices do not represent good value for money. I have real concerns that increases like these will drive people back to their cars; they most certainly do not encourage train use.

"The train operators justify these rises by saying that improved services will follow. I hope that is the case, and certainly recognise that improvements to rail services need to be financed, but given First Great Western's recent announcement regarding the reduction of services in Wales, they cannot blame people for being sceptical about their commitment to meeting passengers' needs."

Notes:

· According to figures releases by Atoc (The Association of Train Operating Companies) Arriva Trains Wales fares will increase 4.3%-5.5%, and First Great Western 4.3%-4.8%, when the changes come into effect in January.
