Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has welcomed the news that Powys County Council has been successful in its bid for funding to improve public transport in Brecon.
The local AM had been vocal in her support of the Council's submission, and had written to the Assembly's Transport Minister offering her backing to their plans.
Ms Williams said: "I am delighted that the money is to be made available to improve the bus network in Powys, especially the Council's plans for a new bus station for Brecon. Anyone familiar with the current infrastructure knows it is not fit for purpose and I hope that work can commence as soon as possible so that services can be improved both for local people and for visitors to the area.
"We all know the importance of public transport - many in our communities are dependant on the bus network to get around, others need to be encouraged to leave their cars at home sometimes and take the bus instead in order to try to cut down on the harmful emissions that are damaging our environment. Raising the standard of our bus services is vital if we want people to make that switch, and can transform the lives of those who would otherwise be left at home. This money will go someway to improving our local infrastructure, and I very much welcome that."
Notes:
Enterprise, Innovation and Networks Minister Andrew Davies announced the latest Transport Grant allocation to local Council's this week. His announcement included £0.38m for the Powys Quality Bus Corridor project, and money for Safe Routes to School schemes for Rhayader Primary and Builth Wells High.
