Local AM slams Assembly Government over school buildings pledge

March 8, 2007 10:28 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has attacked the Welsh Labour Government for failing school children in the constituency.

The local AM challenged the Education Minister to explain why, despite the Assembly Government's objective to make all schools fit for purpose by 2010, many school buildings in Brecon and Radnorshire are still not up to standard.

Ms Williams said: "It is an absolute disgrace that children across the constituency are being taught in classrooms unfit for purpose. The Labour Party promised they would bring the buildings up to scratch but it is now clear that this is not going to happen. Children at Trefonnen School cannot see their blackboard, teachers at Ysgol Cedewain are trying to do their job whilst the walls are falling in, and those attending Brecon High School must dodge the buckets littered throughout their corridors to catch rain water. The situation is entirely unacceptable, and the Minister should apologise to these children, their parents and the teachers."

Notes:

Ms Williams made her remarks during questions to the Education Minister at the Assembly last week. A full transcript of this, and all other, plenary debates is available at www.wales.gov.uk .
