Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has challenged the Welsh Assembly Government to show more support for local Post Offices.
The local AM is campaigning for additional funding for the Post Office network, and an extension to the services that branches can offer, in order to give them a more sustainable future.
Ms Williams said: "The Post Office is at the heart of many of our communities here in Brecon and Radnorshire but lack of support from the Labour Government means that many have shut in recent years, and many more are under threat. It's an issue that local people feel very strongly about, but I fear that without a change in Government policy, Post Offices in rural areas will cease to exist."
Notes:
· Ms Williams has signed a Statement of Opinion at the Assembly, which reads: "This Assembly regrets the systematic erosion of Post Office services by Labour's Westminster Government ,welcomes measures to maintain a strong branch network to benefit local communities, and urges WAG to make further representations to the UK Government regarding; additional funding, enhanced products and services, the development of Post Offices as a one stop shop for Government services, support for the Social Network Payment or similar scheme, an effective replacement for the Post Office Card Account, better access, the importance of rural and urban deprived offices and a secure national Crown Office network." Statements of Opinion are a mechanism for Assembly Members to draw attention to issues of concern, or to highlight achievements, by putting their views on a subject on the record and then encouraging other Members to add their name to the Statement.
Ms Williams will be in Bethel Square, in Brecon, on Saturday morning, campaigning against Post Office closures.
