Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor Paul Ashton has expressed his concern that rogue traders are targeting the growing market for microgeneration projects.
The Councillor for St Mary ward, Brecon, has been made aware of unscrupulous sales people encouraging individuals to purchase equipment which turns out to be unsuitable for their houses.
Cllr Ashton said: "Microgeneration can go along way to helping reduce your carbon footprint, and it's great that people are beginning to embrace this technology and do their bit for the environment. It would be a real shame if people were put off microgeneration because of the rogue traders out there, but equally it is a problem that everyone needs to be aware of.
"Just as in the double-glazing boom a few years back, when some individuals ended up out of pocket, I would urge anyone thinking of installing solar panels or other equipment to contact Powys County Council or the National Park, who can provide you with advice, and a list of reputable salespeople."
Ms Williams, Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire added: "I am grateful to Cllr Ashton for bringing this issue to my attention. I have now raised the matter with the relevant Minister here at the Assembly, as I am sure that this is a Wales-wide issue, and one which may sadly become more of a problem as the market for microgeneration grows."
