Kirsty Williams AM shows support for local tourism businesses

March 23, 2007 12:18 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, has spent a day with local tourism businesses, discussing their ideas and the challenges they face.

The local AM then raised these issues at the National Assembly for Wales, during a debate on tourism in Wales.

Ms Williams said: "I had a very useful meeting with local tourism operators, and saw some fantastic businesses. They were all extremely dedicated to what they do and want to provide the best for their customers. They also make a significant contribution to the local economy, employing local people and using local produce. I was pleased to be able to raise their concerns with the Minister at the Assembly, and hope he will take their views on board.

"The message I got from these businesses is that since the Tourist Board was merged into the Assembly Government, it is too unclear as to where they ought to go to access help and advice. There was also a strong feeling that both Powys County Council and the Assembly Government are failing to adequately support the infrastructure their businesses rely on - whether it's the closure of public conveniences across the constituency or the reduction in our Tourist Information Centres. It is important that the public sector realises the vital contribution tourism makes to the Welsh economy, and ensures that these businesses are supported in every way possible."

Ms Williams met with a collection of tourism operators last Friday.

A debate on tourism was held at the Assembly on Wednesday, when Ms Williams raised a number of issues that the local tourism businesses had discussed with her. A full transcript of this, and all other, Assembly debates can be found at www.wales.gov.uk.
