Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, visited the Radnorshire Women's Aid refuge on Friday to open their new summerhouse and show her support for the work that goes on there.
The summerhouse will be used primarily by the children who stay at the refuge, giving them somewhere new and safe to play.
Ms Williams said: "I was delighted to be able to open the summerhouse, and to show my support for the Women's Aid organisation and the people they help.
"I was concerned, however, to learn that the refuge only has one part-time child support worker, and that even this post is not sustainably funded, being reliant as they are on charitable donations. The sad reality is that nearly half of refuge space in Wales is occupied by children, and whilst voluntary organisations are doing a sterling job, the Government really should offer more support. In Scotland, the Government funds child workers for every refuge, and I will be writing to the Minister here at the Assembly to ask why we cannot do the same."
