Welsh Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has expressed concern at the granting of the Cross Country franchise, previously held by Virgin Trains, to Arriva.
Ms Williams said: "The franchise includes the key Cardiff-Nottingham route, and my concern is that Arriva's record in Wales, particularly around issues such as train cleanliness and facilities, has not been great. I hope that Arriva will use this opportunity to raise customer's satisfaction across all their operations, and thereby encourage more people to make that important environmental shift away from their cars and onto public transport."
Notes:
Arriva will take over the Cross Country network in November, with the franchise due to last until April 2016.
The results of Spring 2007's National Passenger Survey, conducted by Passengerfocus, showed just 66% of Arriva Trains Wales passengers were satisfied with the cleanliness inside their trains, and just 42% satisfied with the toilet facilities on board, compared to 87% and 61% for Virgin CrossCountry.
