Welsh Liberal Democrat economic development spokesperson, Kirsty Williams, has expressed deep concern at the latest labour market statistics, released today.
The figures show 17 per cent of 19 to 24 year olds in Wales are not engaged in education or training and are not in employment. One in ten 16 to 18 year olds also fall into this category.
Ms Williams said: "It is absolutely shocking that such a high proportion of our young people are neither in work or furthering their education. I accept that there are a huge number of factors that can contribute to economic inactivity, but for the sake of the economy as a whole, as well as for these individuals, it is a challenge which this third Assembly must tackle. I hope that when the Assembly reconvenes in September, the Government can bring forward some concrete proposals to try and improve this situation."
