Don't let Welsh schools fall into disrepair, Kirsty Williams warns Government

Kirsty Williams AM issued a stark warning to the Government today: make clear plans to refurbish school buildings or watch our children's prospects crumble.

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson, speaking ahead of the party's Assembly debate on school buildings tomorrow (Wednesday) said: "Labour promised to have all school buildings fit for purpose by 2010. They broke their commitment in March this year when they announced the target would not be met.

"Better school buildings mean better opportunities for our children. They mean better science labs, IT facilities and opportunities for after-school clubs. A broader curriculum and more chances to achieve.

"Estyn have found that refurbished school buildings have a real impact on how well a school performs, in particular pupil achievement. This is especially true for schools in deprived areas - who this Government should be doing its utmost to support.

"I want to see a realistic timetable from the Government and investment to ensure that all schools in Wales are able to provide our children with the education they deserve."

1. Recognises that many school buildings are in need of repair and upgrading;

2. Calls on the Welsh Assembly Government to put in place a realistic timetable and to provide sufficient resources to ensure that all schools are fit for purpose;

3. Urges the Welsh Assembly Government to ensure, in partnership with local authorities, that the funding provided for school building work is fully used for that purpose.
