Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Enterprise and AM for Brecon & Radnorshire, has reacted with disappointment and anger at today's news that both Ystradgynlais and Brynnaman Remploy factories will be closed.
An announcement has been made by the Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain that both factories will close.
Kirsty said; "This is devastating news for both communities. Unions, workers and local campaigners had hoped for a merger of the two with a factory being located at one of the sites however these plans have been thrown aside by Remploy and the Labour Government who have opted for relocation to the more distant Neath site.
"Hope had been given with the DWP stating earlier this month that it would be keeping public procurement on the political agenda. However it is now apparent that this was simply a fob-off by the government as the timing of today's announcement has not allowed enough time to fully investigate this option.
"This week a Welsh delegation took their campaign to Westminster in a bid to gain the Government's support for the jobs and fulfilment these factories provide. They sought to make the Labour Government aware of the very real challenges that people who are threatened with job losses are facing in finding alternative employment and the full impact that will be had on the community. Sadly it seems their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
"On Saturday 15th I shall be joining with campaigners and workers to march to the Ystradgynlais furniture factory demanding that Remploy and the Government rethink their closure plans."
