"It is very concerning news that Powys Local Health Board is likely to be in deficit by £8.3m by the end of the year" said Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon & Radnorshire.
Kirsty continued "I have today spoken to the local health board who have reassured me that they have no plans to reconfigure services and I will be meeting with the LHB's chief executive shortly for further discussions.
"I shall be writing to the Minister for Health and Social Services to ensure that the Welsh Assembly Government handles this situation in a way that doesn't put pressure on Powys LHB to make cuts. I will be calling upon her to ensure that WAGs rural health policy which is currently under development fully considers the additional funding needed for the additional costs of health provisions in rural areas.
"Concerns have been raised about the financial strain of meeting waiting times; these are Assembly Government targets and the Government must therefore provide the resources needed to meet them.
"The high cost of free prescriptions has been highlighted as yet another financial pull, with Powys having the second highest costs of all LHBs in Wales. GPs and the LHB must work together for reassurance that they are getting value for money in this area.
"It is essential that this bad news is not used as an excuse to revisit Powys LHB's reconfiguration plans."
Notes:
At its meeting on 28th November 2007, Powys LHB received a report indicating that it is likely to be in deficit by £8.3m by the year end.
