The future of Rail in Wales - an uphill climb

A cross-party committee report on 'Planning for Future Rail Provision in Wales' has today been welcomed within the Assembly Chamber. The report calls for improvements to stations, passenger services, car parking facilities, rail and bus integration; along with increased rolling stock and a higher priority for a shift to rail freight.
Liberal Democrat AM spokesperson for transport Kirsty Williams AM said: "An effective and efficient rail transport system is key to an improved economic, environmental and socially inclusive Wales. But to move people away from their car and onto the trains we must see a reliable, clean and safe service.
"The report highlights the highly complex nature of the rail system; not only amongst the plethora of organisations involved within Wales but in the complex relationship between the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department for Transport where the DfT shows little understanding of Welsh aspirations and little willingness to listen to or prioritise Welsh rail issues.
"I am concerned that the Assembly Government is underestimating the increase in passenger numbers, particularly on journeys from the valley communities into Cardiff. This will result in future services not meeting demand and a continuation of overcrowding and delays unless a more accurate demand forecast is produced.
"The Minister's response to this report does not go far enough - his commitment of £5.6 million for additional rolling stock will not last long, with 1 train on the Heart of Wales Line alone costing around £4 million. The Committee will now be keeping close scrutiny of the Minister's actions in implementing their recommendations."
