Outraged service users have been successful in halting plans to reduce Brecon swimming pool's opening times. A consultative meeting between Powys County Council representatives, Leisure centre staff and service users led to plans to change weekday early opening times to be dropped. Weekend times will however still be reduced and there will be an increase in ticket price
Kirsty Williams said: "I am delighted that the Council has listened to the early bird swimmers who would have lost out and agreed to keep these early morning opening times.
"It is important that people are able to access exercise facilities as easily as possible and to incorporate healthy living into busy lifestyles.
"I am saddened that swimming prices will have to rise as a result of this compromise, however OAPs and children during school holidays are entitled to free swimming passes so these more vulnerable sectors of society should not be affected by this change.
"Powys County Council has had to face difficult choices following the poor budget settlement they have received from the Plaid-Labour Government. It is unjust that as a result of this poor deal local people will have to pay more to access health facilities. The One Wales Government pledged to promote healthy living through swimming and yet in this case just the opposite has happened."
