Kirsty and local resident Clair Powell at Erwood Toilets
Ieuan Wyn Jones, the Minister for Economy and transport, has confirmed that the Welsh Assembly Government will fund the 5 Powys trunk road toilets that faced closure by the council.
In response to a written question from Kirsty Williams AM the Minister stated that while the long-term plans for the location of public conveniences on trunk roads would be decided in the future under the Government's Route Management Strategies, an interim measure fund the five toilets was in place.
Kirsty Williams, Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon & Radnorshire commented:
"I originally wrote to the First Minister asking for this financial support to be offered and I am reassured by this response which means that for the moment the toilets in Erwood will remain open.
"The Minister states that the Strategy document will not be complete for some time, it is a positive step that in this interim period Erwood will be saved but I am concerned that the long-term future of the toilets still remains uncertain.
"This is an essential service; benefiting both locals and visitors alike. These conveniences are well used and well kept with drivers and walkers being encouraged not only pass through the area but to stop and as a result may also use the local pub or shop and contribute to the local economy."
Notes:
The five toilets affected are:
Caersws and Carno, near Newtown, Cemmaes, near Machynlleth, Erwood, near Builth Wells and Llanfair Caereinion.
