Llangattock County Councillor Jeff Holmes and Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire are calling for the Abergavenny to Brecon X43 bus to be diverted to stop en-route at Plas Derwen in Llangattock.
The two representatives have made joint representations to both Powys County Council and the Director of Sixty Sixty Coaches asking for the bus route to be extended to Llangattock.
Cllr Jeff Holmes said: "I have been approached by a large number of residents who do not have easy access to Brecon and Abergavenny and would benefit greatly from a bus running through Llangattock. Many of these residents are elderly and cannot walk the uphill climb to Crickhowell where the bus currently stops, so are left reliant upon the use of expensive taxis or the goodwill of friends and relatives. Not to mention other residents who would now prefer to use this type of transport instead of driving."
"We want the bus to be extended the short driving distance to Llangattock so that people are not left stranded in the village but have easy access to Brecon and Abergavenny for their hospitals, shops and other essential facilities".
Kirsty Williams said: "I am delighted that newly elected Cllr Jeff Holmes has got straight to work lobbying for the residents of Llangattock".
"Whilst I understand that following the poor budget settlement and the delay in the Transport Services Grant the Council's resources for bus routes are being stretched to their limit, this relatively small diversion would make a huge difference to the residents of Llangattock, especially to those who do not have access to a car.
"In Powys around 40% of the County Council's local bus service budget comes from the Grant, so this is an essential contribution to financing the county's public transport network. I have called upon the Assembly Government to act quickly to pay out the Grant, which is now two months overdue, so that Council's can use this money to improve bus services, such as by adding Llangattock to the X43 route."
Notes:
Local Transport Services Grant - The Local transport Services Grant provides funding for Local Authorities to finance a range of transport initiatives. The grant can be used to enhance existing transport schemes, introduce new services, funding the implementation of new community transport services and capital works such as improvement to bus shelters, transport information and enhancing accessibility through the purchase of low floor buses.
