AM secures WAG's support to save last Royal British Legion care home in Wales

June 10, 2008 3:15 PM

Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire has today secured the First Minister's support for the retention of the only Royal British Legion Care Home in Wales.

Having attended a Public Meeting and Demonstration at Powys County Hall in support of the Care Home, Kirsty Williams AM rushed in the nick of time to Cardiff Bay to call upon the First Minister and the WAG to support her and local campaigners in their call for Crosfield House in Rhayader, Powys to remain open.

Kirsty Williams said: "For the Royal British Legion to close Crosfield House will be to turn their back not just on Rhayader and Powys but on Wales as a whole, as this is the only home they operate in the Principality. Given Wales's contribution to the armed forces over the centuries this is unthinkable. I am delighted that the First Minister has agreed to support our calls to retain the Home.

"Crosfield House provides exceptional care to both ex-service people and elderly residents it is also an essential employer in the Rhayader area. We cannot afford to loose this service and I and my colleague Roger Williams MP are working with Powys County Council's and local campaigners to ensure that the Home is not closed."

Notes:

The British Legion has opened a consultation on the future of the care home following funding difficulties.

The consultation closes on 22nd June 2008; for further information contact 0207 973 7256 or crosfield@britishlegion.org.uk

Kirsty Williams AM and Roger Williams MP for Brecon and Radnorshire along with Brecon RAFA Club recently met with the Rhayader Branch of the British Legion to put forward concerns about the proposals. They have also had discussions with both the Chief Executive of Powys County Council and the Head of Adult Services & Commissioning to seek workable alternatives to closure. Kirsty Williams will next week be meeting with Powys County Council Officers to find a way to take these propositions forward with the Royal British Legion.

Roger Williams MP has raised his concerns with the Chief Executive of the Royal British Legion in London and on the 19th June will be accompanying a delegation to meet with
