Powys County Council has revealed that whilst they will not put a compulsory 20mph zone in place in Llanfaes, Brecon they will implement an advisory 20mph speed limit.
The 20mph plans were revealed in a letter to Kirsty Williams AM following a sustained local '20's Plenty' campaign supported by the local community, Llanfaes Primary School and Christ College.
The 20mph limit will not be enforceable but will provide an advisable guideline to drivers when pupils are going to and from school. The plans include flashing 20mph yellow signs and a bilingual plate reading 'when lights show' and can be programmed to operate at specific times only.
Christ College pupils regularly travel back and forth along the road, into town and to the local amenities in Llanfaes. Many children attending St Joseph's and Llanfaes primary schools also have to walk along the main road to access their schools.
Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire said: "Whilst the 20mph signs are indeed progress and an improvement on the current 30mph speed limit I am disappointed that the council are not prepared to have an enforced speed limit.
"Whilst have an advised speed limit in the morning when children are going to school and in the evening when they are leaving is a vast improvement it will not help when pupils are travelling at irregular times to after school or holiday clubs etc.
"We can celebrate this achievement with measured welcome. We must wait to see what effect the signs will have upon traffic speeds in the area - I hope it will lead to a significant and positive reduction if it does not we will continue the campaign."
