Students must be at heart of HE review

June 26, 2008 5:00 PM

Commenting on the Welsh Assembly Government's announcement of a two-stage student funding review Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Education has called for students interests to remain at its heart.

Kirsty Williams said:

"In the past the Welsh Assembly Government has had a clear policy to promote access to higher education and it is essential that this goal remains.

"This review must address the ever growing funding gap between England and Wales and the impact that this is having on the Welsh HE sector and its students. The Welsh Liberal Democrats have lobbied hard for the government to address this gap and I hope that this announcement will be a step towards doing so.

"It is vital that we balance the need to fully fund a first class HE sector, which can compete on an international stage, with the interests of our students and the need for equal access for all - no matter what their background.

"Higher education must not be the preserve of the wealthy - we need to open up the opportunity to learn to all Welsh citizens."
