We will back new powers for Wales - even stupid ones

September 25, 2008 12:00 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrats today branded a Plaid Cymru-inspired attempt to allow flags on license plates as "stupid" and "wasteful" - but said they won't block the extra powers for Wales.

Janet Ryder intends to use one of the few opportunities AMs have to change Welsh law. Of all the possibilities to change the nation, Ms Ryder wants the Assembly to have the powers to legislate to allow Wales' national flag "y draig goch" to appear on vehicle number plates.

Transport spokesperson Kirsty Williams said: "AMs who aren't in the government have just a few opportunities each Assembly term to put forward their own legislation. I'm amazed that this is the most important thing Janet Ryder could find to do. It speaks volumes about Plaid Cymru's priorities.

"In practice, the authorities already turn a blind eye to this, so anyone who wants to fly the flag on their number plate can do so.

"An LCO could take up to 12 months of work for AMs, MPs and staff at both ends of the M4. At a time when Wales has shocking levels of child poverty, when the economy is in such a state that 2/3 of the country qualifies for European aid, and too many of our young people are leaving school with no qualifications, I am stunned that this LCO bid is being made a priority.

"As usual, Plaid Cymru is putting its nationalist dogma first - the people of Wales come a distant second."

Despite their opposition Ms Williams said her party would support the devolution of powers - albeit reluctantly.

"Unlike some of the other parties, Welsh Liberal Democrats are wholly committed to devolution. That being the case, it would be wrong for us to oppose these powers coming to Wales. There is no reason why a decision like this shouldn't be made in Wales."

Notes:

Janet Ryder's LCO will be considered by AMs on Wednesday next week. The debate seeks AMs' permission to develop the idea in to legislation.
