Kirsty Williams AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Education, will today visit Merthyr College to discuss the difficulties they face as a result of the Welsh Assembly Government's failure to invest in the FE sector.
After last year's below inflation allocation of 1.45% the FE sector has continued to struggle with job threats and course cuts. This year's draft budget does not look set to be any more generous.
Kirsty Williams said: "Next year's draft budget allocates an additional £10.5 million to be shared between FE colleges, school sixth forms, work-based learning and adult and community learning.
"Colleges alone need £15.4 million revenue funding just to stand still.
"This year we have seen cuts to jobs, courses and contact hours - all of which badly impact upon learners.
"The benefits of education are huge - from increased economic productivity and reduced crime to mental and physical wellbeing. We must invest in the FE sector to ensure our country's future"
