During Urgent Questions, Kirsty Williams AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the Economy, today put pressure on the Assembly Government to act urgently to address the impact of job cuts in South Wales East.
Last week 200 job losses were announced in Tredegar, Gilwern and Cross Keys by several manufacturing companies.
Kirsty said: "This is devastating news for the workers and families involved, even more so at a time when families across Wales are feeling the credit crunch pinch.
"The Minister must provide reassurance that these companies and their staff will get the same support that they would have got had the losses been isolated incidents.
"The Minister and his Department must prove that they are adjusting to the changing economic climate and are prepared for the increasing difficulties facing companies in Wales.
"The Royal Bank of Scotland's PMI report yesterday highlighted Welsh companies' unease and the need for decisive action from the Government to ensure that this does not translate into panic and staff lay offs.
"The Government must immediately implement the plan which has emerged from its recent Economic Summits.
"The Plaid-Labour administration must not only act to address problems arising in the immediacy they must also plan for what is likely to be a period of longer-term economic downturn."
