Commenting on today's statistics showing that the volume of motor vehicle traffic on all roads in Wales is still on the increase, Kirsty Williams, Welsh Lib Dem spokesperson for Transport said:
"More and more people are taking to their cars at a time when they are really feeling the pinch and when we're all facing difficult environmental changes.
"It's clear that the Labour-Plaid Government isn't doing enough to encourage people to 'go green' and use public transport. Ieuan Wyn Jones, the Plaid Cymru Transport Minister is continuing the Labour Government's trend to invest in roads rather than in public transport.
"Public transport hasn't improved in Wales and people in rural areas are feeling this. Poor public transport provision is forcing people to turn to car usage which is not good for their pockets neither the environment.
"Apart for the North-South rail link, which incidentally doesn't stop at North Wales' biggest town, this Labour-Plaid Government hasn't done enough to help people in different parts of Wales get out of their cars and into public transport. They are paying lip service to the green transport agenda.
"It's time for this Assembly Government to dedicate more of the Transport budget to public transport, walking and cycling."
Notes:
The volume of motor vehicle traffic on all roads in Wales in 2007 was 2 per cent higher than in 2006.
