Powys AMs Kirsty Williams and Mick Bates AM have slammed the Powys County Council Conservative Group for their failure to stand up for those they represent by abstaining on today's crucial council tax vote.
The Board today voted to throw out the Powys Independent Alliance Group proposal for a 3.99% Council Tax increase and instead agreed to recommend an increase of 2.99% to the full County Council at its next meeting to set Powys' budget for 2009/10. The Welsh Lib. Dem. Group today put forward proposals for a 2.75% increase, which will also be taken to the full council.
Kirsty Williams, AM for Brecon & Radnorshire said: "I am shocked that the Conservative group have abstained on this important issues. This is a missed opportunity to vote to keep Council Tax down for Powys residents at a time when many families are struggling to make ends meet.
"Clearly the conservatives are out of touch with the ordinary person and how the credit crunch is pushing families to the limit of their spending capabilities. They have shown complete contempt for their role in standing up for the people of Powys. "
Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates added:
"The Conservative group on Powys council have clearly failed to step up to the mark, with no serious budget proposal. When the Tories were last in power they decimated public services in Wales. Their abstention from the vote today shows that the Conservative party are still bereft of ideas and policies on how to run our councils seriously."
