Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, today called upon the Assembly Government to support Dyfed Powys police in demands for fair police funding.
Kirsty said: "In order to tackle anti social behaviour and crime in Wales the police force need adequate funding.
"Dyfed Powys police have expressed concerns about proposed changes to the police funding formula in Westminster. There are particular concerns about the future of the Rural Policing Grant, which if ended could see up to 50% of the current £2.6 million of funding to Dyfed-Powys lost.
"There are unique challenges in policing a sparsely-populated rural area, and Dyfed-Powys needs the resources to continue doing this job.
"I have called upon the Assembly Government to use their influence to maintain pressure on the Westminster Government to ensure that Dyfed-Powys' needs are considered."
Notes:
In the Westminster Government's Green Paper "From the neighbourhood to the national: policing our communities together" proposals were included to scrap the floor grant, which guarantees all forces a minimum increase, which is predicted will cost the four Welsh forces approximately £15 million, and the rural policing grant which is estimated would mean Dyfed-Powys and North Wales would lose out on a further £6 million.
