LOCAL AMs SEEK SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS ON A40

February 26, 2009 12:00 AM

WELSH Assembly Members Kirsty Williams, AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, and Nick Ramsay, AM for Monmouth, are pressing for new safety measures to be introduced on the stretch of the A40 Trunk Road between Nevill Hall Hospital and the Powys/Monmouthshire county boundary.

Kirsty Williams said: "Many of my constituents use this stretch of road to access Nevill Hall Hospital, work and shopping opportunities in and around Abergavenny. Nick Ramsay and I are calling upon the Welsh Government to listen to the concerns of local residents and drivers who use this dangerous stretch of road regularly and to make it safer through traffic calming measures."

Nick Ramsay said: "A number of my constituents have expressed their concerns about this dangerous section of the A40, and improved safety measures would clearly be of benefit. I wrote to the Transport Minister as a result, and recently received a response dealing with my safety concerns."

The Minister stated: "Last year the Assembly Government considered introducing a reduced speed limit of 50mph on the A40 from the county boundary to Llanwenarth Arms. This was not justified and the available recorded personal injury data showed the concentration of accidents located at Pysgodlyn Bends to the east."

The Minister's response added, "A final report is expected shortly following an accident safety review at Pysgodlyn Bends, and any safety scheme considered necessary will be prioritised against other competing schemes."
