A large section of the Heart of Wales line passes through Kirsty's constituency
Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire has welcomed network rail's announcement that they will be investing £5m to make desperately needed improvements to the Heart of Wales line.
Following a recent meeting with Miss Williams Network Rail has confirmed that the scheme will be replacing five sets of passing loop points at Knighton, Llandrindod Wells, Llanwrtyd Wells, Llandovery, and Llandeilo. With design and procurement already underway, installation is due to take place in stages from October 2009 to Spring 2010.
Kirsty Williams said:"This is very welcome news for the much beleaguered Heart of Wales Line, who's very importance has been highlighted by the Minister's terrible decision to cut the concessionary fares scheme over the summer instead of increasing the lines capacity in order to accommodate its huge popularity.
"For too long the line had been operating without its full complement and it is welcome that this work will follow on from the recent opening up of the loops at Knighton, Llandovery, Llanwrtyd, Llandrindod and Llandeilo to improve the service further. I will be keeping a close eye on the situation to ensure that this work does go ahead according to schedule.
"I have also raised concerns with Network Rail over the safety of level crossings; the need to upgrade phone lines; improved maintenance standard which I hope will be addressed."
