Powys AM's Kirsty Williams and Mick Bates, have welcomed today's vote by Powys County Council and Powys LHB in favour of their merger.
A merger was recommended in a recent report which examined the options for working together better. Today, in separate meetings, the Council and the LHB each voted to accept the report's recommendation in principle and press ahead with a merger.
Kirsty Williams said: "This is great news for the county and for its residents, it will allow them to shape Powys' health service to fit their own needs and wants rather than having policies imposed from the Bay bubble.
"Powys is an exception to all health and social service delivery models; with a sparse and aging population spread out over a large area, it must be enabled to find its own solutions to the problems that this causes."
"It is imperative that the Assembly provides the resources and support for the merger to move forward and I will be calling upon the Minister to do so."
Mick Bates, AM for Montgomeryshire said: "I welcome this news which I hope will enable the delivery of more effective and efficient health services, offering better value for money and better care for residents across Powys. For too long Powys has battled with the problems of delivering services across rural communities, so I am pleased that Powys Council and LHB have been bold and taken the initiative to find a better solution to fit the needs of the local area."
