Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire has called upon the Minister for Local Government to give Powys Local Authority the tools to successfully merge the Local Health Board with the County Council.
Kirsty Williams said:" In a difficult economic climate, where budgets are being squeezed harder the public sector is being asked to make efficiencies in order to maintain public services. The recent vote in favour of a Powys merger, if put into place, would do just this in allowing for greater collaboration and efficiencies.
"If the merger goes ahead it will mean Powys County Council and LHB will work more closely together and will result in savings on backroom functions, in order to put money into front-line services. During the recession and at a time of reduced budgets this can only be a good thing, allowing for more effective and efficient spending.
"The Welsh Government has responded positively to the proposals but it is imperative that these warm words are backed up with the tools and the support for the merger to succeed. I have called upon the Minister to do just this and will continue to lobby the Welsh Government as the proposals unfold.
"I have no doubt that investment in the merger will mean savings in the future and I do believe that the Welsh Government must support these plans."
