On the day Rhodri Morgan announced his decision to step down as First Minister and Welsh Labour Leader, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have commended Mr Morgan for his commitment to Wales and the Welsh Assembly.
Kirsty Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said:
"Nobody can detract from Rhodri Morgan's commitment to Wales and to devolution. Rhodri has always been a kind and extremely personable colleague, a real people-person. I'll miss our political sparring and even his rugby anecdotes in the chamber but it really is time for a fresh start, fresh faces and fresh ideas in Cardiff Bay."
"Rhodri has single handedly held Welsh Labour together for nearly a decade. Without Rhodri's leadership, Labour really do face disaster in the forthcoming General election."
"Whoever steps into Rhodri's job will face huge challenges: the toughest budget the Assembly Wales has seen, the loss of the talented Jane Davidson and Brian Gibbons and a party in chaos. While Labour consume themselves, our party will carry on analyzing public budgets, listening to voters and developing the policies that will get Wales back on track."
