Kirsty and John meet at the Senedd
Llangynidr resident John Shrouder yesterday cycled to the Welsh Assembly to meet with Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, before he sets off for Copenhagen, in aid of Christian Aid.
John Shrouder will be cycling to Copenhagen on 9th December 2009 to both raise money for Christian Aid and raise awareness about the need to tackle climate change. John will personally deliver a student petition from Crickhowell High School to the Copenhagen summit. The school is twinned with St Peters School in Uganda, a country already being hit hard by climate change, but with little money to tackle the consequences. Following their recent climate change conference, Crickhowell students have pledged to reduce their own carbon emissions and are calling for urgent action which is fair to poor countries like Uganda.
Kirsty Williams said: "I was delighted to meet Mr Shrouder at the Assembly, after cycling determinedly through the rain from the Christian Aid Cardiff Headquarters to the Senedd.
"Climate change is one of the biggest challenges that faces us and our planet today. We must not let the opportunity that Copenhagen presents slip through our grasp, we must halt our sprint towards the dangerous tipping point of global warming to ensure the future of our planet and of our children.
"We are all in this together and we must all act together to tackle climate change - on a world level, on a country level, on a business level and on an individual level.
"We are already seeing the horrors of climate change both here and abroad with the impacts falling disproportionately on developing countries - those least responsible for the situation we now find ourselves in. Any climate change deal must protect the poorest and most vulnerable from the effects of global warming.
"I wish John the best of luck in his brave journey!"
