Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire has uncovered shocking figures showing that ambulances from Brecon and Radnorshire are being sent as far away as Newtown and Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan on 999 Emergency Calls.
Kirsty submitted a Freedom of Information request to the Welsh Ambulance Trust asking for the postcodes areas that Ambulances from several Ambulance stations in South Powys had been sent to for the last three months of 2009. The results were truly astounding. Ambulances from Ystradgynlais were sent as far away as Abergwesyn, Hay-on-Wye and even Barry, all journeys of over an hour or more. Ambulances from Crickhowell were sent as far north as Newtown, over 60 miles away.
Kirsty Williams said: "The figures obtained from the Ambulance Trust are scandalous. Ambulances are being sent up to 60 miles from their own area to answer emergency calls, leaving their own areas vulnerable and without decent Ambulance cover. I have written immediately to the Health Minster to demand that this situation is addressed without delay. Powys patients deserve better."
