Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire has yet again pressed Transport Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones on the apparent lack of activity by the Labour/Plaid Assembly Government on unifying the concessionary bus fare schemes in England and Wales. In a question to the Minister in the National Assembly on Wednesday, January 27 Kirsty asked what the exact issues are that prevent the two schemes being harmonized so that Welsh citizens can use their passes in England.
The Minister replied that different eligibilities and "challenging funding issues" were the blocking point at the moment. Kirsty challenged him to publish all the correspondence between Cardiff Bay and Westminster to allow us to see what the issues are.
Kirsty Williams said: "I have been questioning the Minister for two years now about why it is that people with a concessionary bus pass can travel throughout Wales, but not in the vast majority of England. Herefordshire and Powys County Councils have managed to come up with a solution to allow use of each others passes to cross the border. It is simply not good enough that governments is Cardiff Bay and Westminster cannot do the same. Devolution is not about erecting barriers at Offa's Dyke."
