Kirsty Williams, Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire has welcomed the news that there have been improvements in the performance of the Welsh Ambulance Service in Powys.
There has been a marked improvement in ambulance response times with the figures for July showing that over 65% of emergency calls were answered within the 8 minute target, which is a great improvement from April 2009 when just 46% of calls were answered within 8 minutes.
The Welsh Ambulance Trust have also introduced a range of new measures to improve services in Powys. Firstly, three specialist pratcicioners have been introduced in South Powys that have managed to prevent over 150 patients having to be admitted to Hospital by offering treatment at the scene. A new Minor Injury protocol has been agreed with Powys Local Health Board that means more people will be taken for treatment at Llandrindod and Brecon Hospitals, saving unnecessary trips to Nevil Hall or Hereford Hospital. And thirdly, a new practice has been established that will see elderly people who have fallen be referred to a district nurse to prevent it happening again.
Kirsty said "I welcome all of the improvements that the Welsh Ambulance Trust have made to make sure a better service is provided to Powys Patients. All of these measures combined will mean that not only will people be responded to more quickly, but more care will be taken in deciding where the most appropriate place for treatment will be. It is much better for everyone if patients can receive appropriate treatment at a hospital closer to home."
